Important Considerations in the Heat Treatment of Leaf and Compression Springs

Leaf springs are one of the simplest of spring designs, commonly used in vehicle suspension systems such as heavy trucks, locomotives and even military vehicles such as the M1A2 Abrams tank. Leaf springs are designed to evenly distribute the weight of a heavy load better than for example, an ordinary coil-type spring. They are sometimes referred to as semi-elliptical, carriage (cart) or laminated springs because they differ from traditional coil springs by their distinctive arc shape. The center of the arc provides location for the axle, while tie holes are provided at either end for attaching to the vehicle body.
